Six-pointer as Westmeath welcome Cavan to town
Westmeath’s eight point defeat away to Louth last weekend in the opening round of the National League has turned up the heat as they prepare to welcome Cavan to Cusack Park on Sunday. Hopes were high ahead of the trip to Louth that, even allowing for the difficult nature of the opening encounter, the losing run could be arrested. If we are to retain any hope of promotion a win on Sunday is a must.
Westmeath capable of getting league campaign off to a winning start
Westmeath v Louth (Drogheda 2.30pm)
The A-Z of the year that was 2010
A - Athlone GAA Club celebrated their 125th year in existence. It was an honour for me to be captain 50 years on from the first of the famous six-in-a-row wins. Unfortunately we added no silverware at senior level. Making the knockout stages was progress and hopes are high that we can build on that in 2011. Our u14s won the Feile and u16s won the county title indicating a bright future for the club.
End of the road for Westmeath as Derry scrape through
All Ireland SFC qualifier
Difficult test as Derry come to town
Westmeath welcome Derry to Mullingar for round two of the qualifiers on Saturday at 5pm. After the disappointment of the Louth defeat Pat Flanagan’s men will be hoping to get back to winning ways. Home advantage is an obvious plus but Derry will be a tough nut to crack and will deservedly wear the favourites tag.
Opportunity missed but still plenty to play for
Leinster SFC semi-final
Westmeath a‘Louth’ to dream
A glorious opportunity to reach a Leinster final. That’s what both managers must be drumming into their players’ heads ahead of Sunday’s semi-final showdown between Westmeath and Louth in Croke Park. Not that the players themselves will need any reminding.
Roscommon hoping to book place in Connacht final
Roscommon footballers will enjoy the benefit of home advantage when they take on neighbours Leitrim this Sunday in the Connacht semi-final. The prize on offer is a date with either Sligo or Galway in the Connacht final. That semi-final will take place in Pearse Stadium on Sunday week, the same day as Westmeath are in action against Louth.
Double All-Star Keane returns
Pat Flanagan has worked the oracle again by convincing John Keane to return to the county panel. I’m sure the likes of Dessie, Gary and Heals played their part too in talking him around. Last year’s captain and double all-star recipient Keane (30) will be a major boost to the camp.
